God with Us: Finding God in the Day-to-Day

Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually! – 1 Chronicles 16:11, ESV

It’s incredible what we uncover simply by paying attention.

When I was diagnosed with a rare disease, I believed my faith would carry me through. And it did, but not in a way I ever could have imagined.

Since I was a young girl, I knew who God was and what it meant to be in relationship with Him. Throughout my childhood and young adult life, I’d built a relationship with Him—always eager to learn more, to find ways to connect with Him. What I knew, but never really experienced until I had to battle my health daily, was the gift of His presence.

It wasn’t until I started looking that I discovered God at work in my life. Not in the abstract, but in the day-to-day. Not in the big picture, but in the details that were quick to slip by unnoticed.

"It wasn't grand gestures that strengthened my faith, but God's day-to-day provision." - MaryBeth Eiler

Finding God active and present in my life shifted a lot about what I believed about God. Before, God was some distant figure. But after sensing His presence and feeling His provision, the abstract became real. God shifted from a nice concept to a very real presence.

It wasn’t the grand gestures that strengthened my faith, but the day-to-day provision by way of the ability to cook dinner on my own for the first time in months, no longer needing medication to help with pain management, a full night’s sleep in a comfortable bed, strength to walk around the neighborhood with only the aid of one crutch, and timely encouragement from a friend that I felt Him carrying me through.

The more I paid attention, the more I came to know God as someone who shows up in my weakness; someone who stays when I feel my worst; someone who isn’t deterred by my questions and doubts; someone who cares about my every need.

God is with us. He is not a distant figure, but a very real presence in our lives. He doesn’t wait for an invitation, He’s already moving and active—we simply have to pay attention to see the ways He is at work. May we open our eyes to experience the gift of His presence.

I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me. Proverbs 8:17

Prayer

Lord,

You go before us and are with us.

You meet our every need.

What a gift that we are never alone.

May I be reminded of your presence as I go about my day.

Open my eyes to see your provision.

Amen.

“It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” – Deuteronomy 31:8, ESV
